Vault Tools
Vault Tools are the successor to vanilla tools. These can be modified with jewels to apply new affinities and traits to the tool.
Affinities allow you to break chests/coins at a significantly faster speed enabling you to instantly mine all coins and chests apart from wooden ones.
There are also jewels that can change the tools functionality to include that of another. For example you could put a Shovelling jewel on a Pick to create a Mattock that can mine as fast as a pickaxe and dig as quick as a shovel!
Vault Tool Tiers
Vault Tools are comprised of seven different tiers, with each having increasingly more Capacity and Repair Slots.

Implicits
Vault Tools have a variety of attributes that separate them from vanilla ones. These Implicits act as a foundation for the creation of tools that are capable of dramatically speeding up the looting process.
Durability
Vault tools share their durability value with Netherite tools: 4096. This value remains static no matter what tier you are using, but can however be increased via the use of added Durability on Jewels.
Repair Slots
Repair Slots are required for the use of Repair Cores on Vault Tools-- which are capable of fully replenishing a tool's durability. For each Repair Core applied to a tool, a subsequent Repair Slot is used, and, when all Repair Slots are used, the tool can no longer be repaired. The number of Repair Slots present on a Vault Tool scales with tier.
Capacity
Capacity is the basis for all Vault Tool customization via the use of Jewels. Alike repair slots, the amount of Capacity present on a Vault Tool scales with its tier, as described in the table above.
To apply a Vault Jewel to a Vault Tool, it must have a greater capacity remaining than the size of the jewel. Jewels, when either found or crafted, will have a random size that ranges from 10-35; this size can however be reduced via the Jewel Cutting Station. When Jewels are applied to a Vault Tool, its total Capacity is reduced in direct correlation with how large the Jewel is.
With this being said, the absolute maximum amount of Jewels that can be applied to a Vault Tool can be calculated using the following equation, given all Jewels are their minimum size, 10:
Capacity / 10
or, in the case of a Prismatic tier Vault Tool,
600 / 10 = 60
